by Rand Blimes

The 5th Global Peace Summit

"A World Together"

The UN Global Peace Summit 2026, held at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok under the theme “A World Together,” united young leaders and peacebuilders from around the world. Organized by Humanitarian Affairs Asia in partnership with the United Nations, the summit featured renowned speakers who shared insights on empathy, leadership, and peacebuilding.

BYU–Hawaii students represented the university at this global platform, engaging in dialogue on conflict resolution and intercultural understanding. Each was named a Global Peace Ambassador, committing to lead a community-based peace project reflecting BYU–Hawaii’s mission of leadership and global citizenship.

Student Highlights

"Participating in the Global Peace Summit in Bangkok, Thailand was a deeply meaningful experience for me. Being surrounded by students and leaders from all over the world helped me see peace not just as a concept we study, but as something we actively live and work toward. Through conversations and shared stories, I learned how empathy, dialogue, and mutual respect are essential in addressing conflict and promoting understanding. Hearing different perspectives pushed me to reflect on my own values and the responsibility I have as a student and global citizen.

What stood out most to me was how much I grew both personally and academically during the summit. Engaging with people from different cultures challenged my assumptions and reminded me that even small, local efforts can contribute to lasting global change. Being in Bangkok also deepened my appreciation for cultural connection and collaboration. Overall, the experience strengthened my commitment to studying political science and pursuing work centered on peace, human dignity, and service to others."

"My experience at the Global Peace Summit in Bangkok, Thailand was one of the most special experiences I have ever had. After listening to talks from various speakers, whether they were survivors of genocide and war, ambassadors, or activists, it truly broke my heart to hear their stories and what they have been through. From this experience, I learned that I want the conflicts and hardships they endured to be heard, because no one deserves to go through this unfair suffering.

This conference also inspired me to become a voice for those who are voiceless. I learned that peace does not only mean the absence of war, but it can begin within ourselves. We can create peace by starting small and going micro. It only takes one person to begin making a difference. Although peace is a long and difficult process that may sometimes feel impossible, going micro can still positively impact people’s lives.

I met so many inspiring and like-minded individuals from around the world as well, and they encouraged me to not be afraid to create change. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and experience, and I will make sure to apply what I have learned to make a meaningful difference in this world."

Participating in the Global Peace Summit in Bangkok, Thailand was a meaningful and eye-opening experience. One of the biggest insights I gained was how peacebuilding looks different across cultures, yet shares common values such as dialogue, empathy, and cooperation. Hearing from delegates and speakers from various countries helped me better understand global perspectives on conflict resolution and human dignity.

A highlight of the summit was engaging in discussions and activities that encouraged collaboration and critical thinking. These interactions pushed me to reflect on my role as a student of political science and how I can contribute to peace efforts in my own community and future career. The experience strengthened my interest in global affairs and reinforced the importance of inclusive and respectful leadership.

Overall, the summit was both inspiring and educational, and it motivated me to continue learning about international cooperation and peacebuilding initiatives.
