Mandatory Information on Syllabus

Syllabus Requirements

During the first week of class, all faculty will provide a course syllabus to each student. Although modifications may be made throughout the semester, this document will contain the following information (as applicable to the discipline):

  • Course information: title, number, semester, year, credits, prerequisites, location, meeting time.
  • Faculty information: name, office location, office hours, telephone, email.
  • Course readings/materials: course textbook(s), author, publisher. Supplementary readings (indicate whether required, recommended, or optional) and any supplies required.
  • [ NEW ] Course description should include:
    • content of the course and how it fits into the broader curriculum;
    • expected proficiency required to undertake the course, if applicable. May include, and must be consistent with, catalog course description.
    • A listing of the department or program learning outcomes is required together with the ratings (level of coverage/rigor) taken from the department's assessment matrix document representing the degree to ascertain what the course addresses for each program learning outcome.

      To get to the Program Learning Outcomes and the Outcomes Matrix for the department/program:

      Select a browser to open the link efolio.byuh.edu which will then lead you to the assessment e-folio. From there, hover over Academics, then click on colleges. Then hover over the college of choice and then click on the department/program. Within the department/program, click on Outcomes Matrices. Generally, a new tab will open up with a pdf of the Outcomes Matrix. Click on the pdf which will then open up or download. Review the document and look specifically for the information on the course being taught to obtain coverage/rigor.

  • A statement of Course Goals (more general) and Student Learning Outcomes which could be Course, and Program-Learning Outcomes. And when applicable, Institutional Learning Outcomes.
    • Demonstration of alignment to SLOs/CLOs, Program Level Outcomes (PLOs), and Institutional (ILOs) Learning Outcomes where applicable along with the extent of coverage. For examples click on the following link: accreditation.byuh.edu and see ILO-PLO-SLO alignment for a religion course and a COMM110 course along with other ILO resources.
    • Instructional methods incorporated in course outline (schedule): describe the teaching techniques (e.g. lecture, case study, small group discussion, private instruction, studio instruction, values clarification, games, journal writing, use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Canvas, audio/video conferencing, etc.). Describe how you use the Framework for Student Learning to help students prepare, engage, and improve their learning.
    • Course calendar: a schedule or outline (daily or weekly major topics or assignments). Tentative or work in progress to allow for modifications during the semester. Required dates on the course calendar are the ''withdrawals from classes’ deadline" and the time, date, and location of the final exam, scheduled according to the university final exam schedule.
    • Course policies: specify course rules, including your policies on attendance, tardiness, class participation, make­up exams, and plagiarism/academic integrity.
    • Evaluation: specify how students will be evaluated, what factors will be included, their relative value, and how they will be tabulated into grades (on a curve, absolute scores, etc.)

  • Student Academic Grievance policy: Students who feel that their work has been unfairly or inadequately evaluated by an instructor are encouraged to pursue the matter as an academic grievance by following the steps found in the Academic Grievance Policy at catalog.byuh.edu.
  • Disability Services: [NEW] Students with disabilities or those who are pregnant are encouraged to contact the instructor for a confidential discussion of their individual needs for academic accommodation. It is the policy of Brigham Young University–Hawaii to provide flexible and individualized reasonable accommodation to students with documented disabilities or those who are pregnant. To receive accommodation services for a disability, students must be registered with the Disability Services.
